On this page you can find "Open Gates and Glowing Faces" a poem that is now part of "Cantos Alegres" which is a musical collaboration in which Paul Basler composed to my poetry. This is the poem that initiated this collaboration, thanks to the students in the Edinburg North High School Choir (Texas) who searched for a Latino poet and found and selected me through this website. Thank YOU!
tonight I drink the drool
through your
kiss-colored eyes
tonight I taste your
hungry song,
violet,
entrancing ...
I could listen to you
thousands of times,
over and over,
until
my lips
and limbs
are pulled apart into a crimson glow ...
kiss-colored
tonight I am spellbound,
indulging in the
melody of
this
nakedness
how rich is the sun
and the avocado I eat
how grand is the love
that I offer to your day
this river is rich
which opens such fine paths
so ample is the grass
that guards angel guides
mango-flavored nights
open beautiful paths
and
orange lights taste my eyes...
great avocado rich that I eat,
you are a grand seed, my love,
amply I plant you,
in days,
divine days
when rain dropplets fall
they unite and upon evaporating
rise towards the clouds
towards the sky
towards the clear silence
that is the basket of hope
of dreams
of the colors that
kiss life
on my
mind
when tears of sorrow fall
they unite with joyful songs
in my being,
I begin to realize again
that of the air,
of the sun,
of earth I am
and that I love the dream that dreams us
and the colors of people
that are my
people
drips swirl down my cheek
the lips I hold speak
gaseous nonsense, like
prayers that leak
from the mouths
of sleepwalkers
of course I am happy,
wouldn't you be? when I look
at open gates and see a garden full of life,
of good health, and smiles of glowing faces . . . itignites my spirit
I have never been more excited to be alive
and in the radiance of peace that grows, I know that when I
surrender to sleep and the ocean of night
cradles my dreams,
I can only be in one state of being . . .
completely open . . .
in love again, I embrace the blanket of sunlight
and indulge, flesh and spirit, on the festival of warmth
the sky darkens from a rich orange to twilight violets,
deepening colors that send my blood into a rising boil
upon entering the house, I leave my body at the door
and blissfully swim and wander into the rivers of thoughts
that overflow in my mind
I'm consumed by the memory of the ocean, land of water
and life, mother of waves, hypnotizing children who repeatedly
lick the shore like a tongue who's surfaces reflect the
twinkling lights in the sky
in love again, I bathe in the celestial tickle of dreams
and indulge, in full departure, on the magic of the night
the sight of the comet dazzles my being and crystallizes
my enchantments
its trail entrances me as I imagine it being as long as the
longest of miracles... I feel blessed
upon reentering my body, fire is my spirit and in an unconscious
sleepdance, I awaken into a euphoric spell
I hum, the rhythm is slow, not unlike ocean waves
night lifts its dark veil of indigos and shadows
I'm consumed once more by the melody of dayfall
young birds, old birds welcome the sun
I listen to their songs and embrace the blanket of light
its warmth is a gift,
a festival of life
over my hands
falls the light
that nourishes
the currents
of the imagination
that is
like a living river
of my
consciousness
I am able to know
and re-lick
the fruit
of the sun
I taste the mouth
of its
energy and
savor the
dream that
drinks the
nights in order to
experience
once again
the light
of
another
day
dusk falls
in unison the crickets sing
their songs bring warmth
they unite me with the shadows
that swallow and await,
dressed in deep blue,
for the delicate light
the god, the color of lemons
his juices are pure
they awaken in me
a constant
awakening
I love the night ... and
enchanted I am
when the flame of a
single match dances its
orange dance in front
of your face
light from the stars
caress your face
like a slow lick
of water over the sand of the sea
I love the sky ... and
drunk I am
with joy when
the white lunar kiss
forms a good home
of dreams
in your face
light from your eyes
warm my insides
like a slow awakenig
that celebrates the light of
the sun
Visit my Painting Galleries: For over twenty years, image-making for me has been a passion and avenue for exploring experiences, dreams and preoccupations, including issues of our dependence on technology, consumer culture, relationships, spirituality, politics, and the human "theatre". The paintings are arranged into different galleries, grouped, chronologically (the earliest from 1993 and spanning into the present) and "themes", especially when I find myself working in a series of paintings inspired from my life experiences, memories, nostalgia and personal interest, for example multi-generational, cross-cultural, popular consumer-based iconography and imagery, such as Chespirito, the Morton Salt Girl, muppets from Sesame Street, the Mexican Loteria, and Art History Homages.
