"Soothsayers"

A Previous Featured Painting

Composite of images including the Virgen de Guadalupe, divine apparitions on toilet paper and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair
"Soothsayers"
acrylic & oil on board & wood
34 1/2" x 25 7/8" © 2007 Gabriel Navar

When I started this piece, I began filling the entire surface, frame and all, with purple paint. As I waited for it to dry, I overheard on the television that there had been apparition of the Virgin Mary on, I believe, a bagel. That was the springboard for a series of images about divine apparitions, mediums/soothsayers (the "Al Gores" of the world), and end of times paranoia (the clock is ticking...). Of course, in my mind, with references to Catholicism, apparitions, the very possible need for divine interventions, the painting seemed incomplete without a reference to the debacles of recent times, including those of none other than Tony Blair (England's Prime Minister). Reflecting upon the finished piece, I (and here goes my Catholic flashbacks), I can not help thinking about different states of mind and being, including purgatory, hell and mental paradise.

Visit my Current Featured Painting "app 4 disgruntled days". It was currently added to my site on April 2013. Also, visit my Archived Featured Paintings, I have about 20 Previous Featured Paintings. Each one of them has a story, a description about their creation as well as some background about their form, content and symbolism. Looking at the Previous Featured Paintings page I realize that I have had a wide range of interests over time in the figurative, narrative work that I have created over the years. I hope you can appreciate that an element that ties my work together is my desire to create thought provoking compositions that involve the figure, rich colors, and, often, the human theater.
